Wal-Mart Distribution Center (WMDC) and elsewhere in western Greene
County
Linda Northrop and I spent about three hours this afternoon birding
western Greene County, primarily WMDC and backroads nearby. Significant
finds included
Canada Goose (177);
Mallard (62);
American Black Duck (4 WMDC);
Gadwall (33);
Green-winged Teal (6 on Gravel Woods Road near WMDC);
American Wigeon (WMDC);
Northern Shoveler (3 on Gravel Woods Road);
Ring-necked Duck (18 on Gravel Woods Road--an unusually high number for
Greene County);
Northern Harrier (4--including one diving on and appearing to make
contact with a Red-tailed Hawk);
Cooper's Hawk (2);
Red-tailed Hawk (15);
American Kestrel (11);
Wild Turkey (56 in a soybean field at the intersection of North Mohawk
Road and Idell Road);
American Coot (2 WMDC);
Killdeer (84);
Eurasian Collared-Dove (3 adjacent to West Greene High School);
Red-headed Woodpecker (on Green Road);
Loggerhead Shrike (on Highway 340 0.2 mile east of Highway 348);
Common Raven (on Highway 70 approximately 1.5 miles north of Highway
11-E in Greeneville, at Summers-Taylor quarry--I've seen ravens at or
near this site several times over the last few winters);
Red-winged Blackbird (1008+);
Common Grackle (1000+).
