Subject: Burkes Garden (Jan 8,2005)

Six birders left Independence, VA this morning with a lot of faith
in the weather report. When we left Independence it was raining and
overcast and stayed with us all the way until we got to the entrance
to Burkes Garden. The skies started breaking clear with blue skies
overhead, but noticeable wind out of the west at about 25-35 mph. But
by the time we reached the southern lip of the Garden even the wind
slowed down to an acceptable rate. We were rewarded for our trip as
several exciting birds were found. The overall list is below:

Golden Eagle 3
Rough-legged Hawk 1
Harrier (male) 1
Coopers Hawk 2
Kestrel 11
Red-tailed Hawk 17
Red-headed Woodpecker 9 birds (all adults)
Raven 9
Black Duck 3
Green-winged Teal 2
Mallard 25
Canada Goose 2
Great Blue Heron 1
Screech Owl 1 (peeking out from a roost hole)

The total species count was 30 different birds which is a good total for a
winter day in Burkes Garden. Participants included: William & Joyce
Roberts, Jim Keighton, Peter Zwadyk, Scott Jackson-Ricketts and Glen Eller.
Our 2nd
weekend of the month regullary scheduled birding trips are always enjoyable
ventures, everyone is encouraged to tag along. We try to go to active
birding spots each month so feel free to join us each month.
