[Bristol-Birds] Results of BBC Steele Creek Park Bird Walk

This morning a group of birders enjoyed a BBC Bird Walk at Steele Creek Park
led by Rack Cross and Jr. Naturalist Sam Cross. Clouds cleared off for a 56'F
cool dry walk around the Nature Center, Boat Dock, Beach House Lodge, and
playground areas. This was a small sampling of Steele Creek Park's 2,224 acres
of
land and 52 acres of lake area. The walk took part in a highly intensive
recreation portion of the park focusing on disturbed habitat with various
artificial structure. Attendees included Kevin Elam, Nature Center Manager at
the park
and Chris O'Bryan, (Sr.) Jr. Naturalist at Steele Creek Park. Kevin Hamed,
former Nature Center Manager and now biology instructor at Virginia Highlands
Community College, was present also. Other attendees were as follows:

The bird of the day was a Red-breasted Nuthatch by the Nature Center. Other
species identified included:
White-breasted Nuthatches (well described by Sam Cross)
Canada Goose
Mallard
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
Downy Woodpecker
Eastern Phoebe
Carolina Chickadee
Eastern Tufted Titmouse
Carolina Wren
Eastern Bluebird
Northern Mockingbird
Northern Cardinal
Dark-eyed Junco
Song Sparrow
.
In summary, nine participants identified 15 species of birds.
