Hello all,
I was fortunate enough to spend a few days over Christmas break at Avon, NC
on the Outer Banks. The weather was nice most of the time and provided good
conditions for birding at Pea Island, the Bodie Island lighthouse, the Hatteras
lighthouse (old sight), and Buxton woods. Seventy-seven species were observed.
Some of the notable birds seen were:
Northern Gannet 100+ (seen off the pier at Rodanthe)
American White Pelican 18
Little Blue Heron 3
Tricolored Heron 5
Mute Swan 1
Tundra Swan 100+
Snow Goose 300+
Northern Pintail 200+
Black Scoter 75+
Surf Scoter 4
Northern Harrier 6
American Kestrel 3
Black-bellied Plover 13
American Oystercatcher 3
American Avocet 18
Greater Yellowlegs 8
Lesser Yellowlegs 2
Willet 34
Sanderling 100+
Short-billed Dowitcher 1
Wilson's Snipe 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler 100+
Swamp Sparrow 12
I was able to take a few good pictures. Feel free to check them out at:
