[Bristol-Birds] Red-tail and Night Crawlers

Area Birders,
This story was related to David Raines, one of our Buchanan County Bird Club
members, from his neighbor. The neighbor was recovering from surgery and had
nothing to do but watch birds from his window with his binos.

A couple of weeks ago there had been a great deal of rain and the ground in
a field near the neighbor's house was saturated. A small flock of crows was
walking about on the ground catching and eating the night crawlers that were
on the surface.

An immature Red-tailed Hawk flew down to the ground near the crows,
evidently to investigate what the crows were eating. The neighbor watched as
the Red-tail caught a night crawler in the talons of one foot and ate it.
The hawk then hopped forward on both feet a short distance, caught another
night crawler and ate it. The hawk left shortly thereafter. Have any of you
seen this type of behavior before from a raptor, other than possibly a
vulture?
