Area Birders,
Yesterday (12/11/04) Ed Talbott and myself (Roger Mayhorn) birded a snow
covered logging road in an area of Buchanan County called Caney Island
Branch. We managed to log 21 species,with a Cooper's Hawk, a Pileated
Woodepecker, 7 Carolina Wrens, 1 Winter Wren and a Ruby-Crowned Kinglet
being the highlights of the day.
The logging road is not far from Ed's house, so it was with some surprise
that after a hike of over a mile we were looking down on Ed's house at the
right time to see a Cooper's Hawk circling over Ed's backyard bird feeders.
Ed had been finding feathered remains in his yard, and suspected an
accipiter. On this particular flight the Cooper's didn't seem to have any
luck, but it was interesting to be looking down on it from above while it
went through its aerial maneuvers.
Enjoy the birds,
Roger Mayhorn
Grundy, VA
