Bristol Birders,

Michelle and I, along with our dog Chazzie, spent New Year's Day birding the
reclaimed strip mine site and county park at Enoch's Branch in Buchanan County,
VA.  It was our first time birding this area and it looks like it will be good
Blue and Golden-winged Warbler habitat in the spring.  In addition, it appears a
mountain bike trail is being created that will also be a nice birding trail.  We
found lots of birds including all six woodpeckers for our area.  Not a single
raptor was stirring along the ridges.

After lunch, we made a quick trip to Poplar Gap Park to look for Horned Larks.
We were not disappointed, finding a flock of about 30 birds.  After carefully
scanning the flock for any unusual species I decided they were all larks.  The
weather was perfect for this first day of birding in 2004
