Area Birders,
Yesterday, the 28th. three members of the Buchanan County Bird Club birded
some nearby areas in Southwestern VA and Northeastern TN. Present were David
Raines, Lynda Mayhorn and myself, Roger Mayhorn.
The highlight of the day was the White-winged Scoter we saw at Musick's
Campground on South Holston Lake on the VA, TN line.
From the great distance we were observing the bird appeared to be an
immature female. The bill was dark with lighter colored lores. A white patch
could be seen near the eye, and when the bird opened its wings to stretch
the white on the secondaries was clearly visible. The bird stayed mostly on
the VA side of the lake while we were there. We saw another bird at an even
greater distance fly across the lake and disappear behind a point. This bird
also had some white on the wing. It looked as if it may also be a Scoter.
We started the day by birding Doran Bottom or the old Richlands Airport.
Coordinates: 37 05 28 N 81 59 45 W.
The highlights there were 2 Gadwalls near the river with a Black Duck, 2
Wood Ducks and 16 Mallards.
We then drove on to the Weir Dam in TN near South Holston Dam.
There we saw 2 male Redheads, 3 Green-winged Teal, as well as 52 Ring-necked
Ducks, 25 American Wigeon and 100+ Buffleheads. On Osceola Island next to
the Weir Dam 8 Golden Crowned Kinglets, a Hermit Thrush, 4 Winter Wrens,
several White-throated Sparrows and a Swamp Sparrow were seen.
Later in the day we stopped by Musicks, where we saw the Scoter. We also saw
11 Common Loons, 5 Pied-billed Grebes, 2 Ring-billed Gulls, and in the
distance 7 Mergansers sp.?
Enjoy the birds,
Roger Mayhorn
