Bristol Area Birders,
Ed and I spent the day looking for a couple of birds we didn't find
and finding a couple of birds we weren't looking for, exactly. We
thought the cold winter day might yield a Golden Eagle around
Beartown Mountain or possibly even a Snow Bunting in the Holston
Lake area, but we had no luck with those species; however, we did
add a Redhead Duck to our life lists, compliments of the Weir Dam,
and I also picked up a Mute Swan at Middlebrook Lake.
Middlebrook Lake was almost completely covered by a skim of ice,
but we still were able to see Hooded Mergansers, American Coots,
Gadwalls, and several other species as well as two Mute Swans.
Waterfowl were in abundance at the lake and the Weir Dam, also. The
standout species at Musick's Campground was Long-tailed Duck(a male
and female). While at Musick's, we also saw Horned Grebes, Eared
Grebes, Pied-billed Grebes, and Common Loons. The Weir Dam was host
to Ring-necked Ducks, Bufflehead, American Wigeons, three
Green-winged Teals, and Mallards, in addition to the lone Redhead.
We also scoped an American Pipit feeding not more than 60 feet from
us.
It's always great to see so many different species in our region,
especially when two of them are life birds.
