Hi. Can you remind me, where's the check box that tells itunes not to
delete contents on ipod shuffle when it is connected, or is this not an
option?

Hi Merrill,
I would try installing the iPod software first, then plugging in the iPod.
Be warned that if you don't have any music in your library yet, if iTunes
recognizes the Shuffle it will delete all its contents. It automatically
syncs the Shuffle with your computer, and if there's no music, it
"updates" the iPod to reflect that.
