Anna, you would get duplicates if you re-imported files from somewhere
else. That has happened to me. You can also wind up with duplicate
titles in iTunes. If you have 50 files, you'll end up with 100
listings. ~Merrill

Hi Barbara,
No offense taken. I know how frustrating it is to have things quit
working and have to reinstall etc. I'm sorry you lost your library
list, but I'm very glad you still have your actual music. As someone
suggested, you can use the Import Folder command on the File menu to
import your whole My Music folder, which should restore your library
unless you also have music stored in other locations. If that's the
case, follow the same procedure to import them. If your library
previously contained music in folders other than My
Music\iTunes\iTunes Music, it is important to have iTunes set so that
it only creates a shortcut to the files, rather than copying them to
that folder. I don't think it would make copies of music already in
that folder though. You've already gotten advice on how to make this
change if necessary.
Good luck. I hope everything will work okay now.
All the best,
Anna
