Ah never tried format 3 I always use 4 because I assumed the quality would
be better, I'll give format 3 a try next book...

I don't have any problems keeping my place while using format 3.  I haven't
again tried format 4.

I do have problems when syncing the shuffle with ITunes.  There are time
when my place is lost.
