Hi
With the release of jaws 7.0 being available tomorrow, Monday October 3rd, I
am today posting the new build of the iTunes jaws scripts, version 2.5. All
four versions for jaws 5.0, 6.0, 6.20 and 7.0 have been updated.
You can obtain them from
http://www.tandt-consultancy.com/itunesscripts.html
Apart from making the scripts available to jaws 7.0 users, the scripts
include:
* Information within the manual about how to update your existing scripts
and authorisation file to work with jaws 7.0.
* The ability to assign up to five keystrokes for non-standard controls if
they are necessary. These will be retained even if you upgrade to a new
release in the future as and when we provide more features.
* A colour training tool for the Podcasts, although during the tests this
was proved to be more reliable anyway.
* Hints in the manual as to some backup strategies you can use if everything
else fails.
If you are not using Podcasts, or you do not need the ability to assign
keystrokes for non-standard controls, there is no real need to upgrade.
However, here is the relevant section from the manual to save you ploughing
through it, as there are sixty sections in it now.
Enjoy!
The iTunes interface is visually complex to the extent that it seems to use
different colours on different machines to denote information, such as
Podcast episodes which have not been downloaded. Of equal importance, it
uses non-standard controls which need to be activated by the click of a
mouse, however the controls cannot be seen even as graphical images with the
JAWS Cursor.
During our extensive testing, we have found that, providing computers are
precisely set to the recommendations for display settings as provided within
the JAWS Help System, there will be no problems in terms of accessing the
Podcast episode information. Furthermore, the keyboard assignments
discussed in this User Guide will perform their required actions and will
not require modification.
However, if you do experience problems with either of these factors, there
are procedures you can use to remedy this.
Assigning Keystrokes to Non-Standard Controls
You will need the assistance of a sighted person to assist you in training
the non-standard controls.
Let us assume you would like to train jaws as to the location of the button
to expand/collapse Podcast episodes.
. Press the "Library Key" to place focus on the "iTunes Library".
. Press "DOWN ARROW" to reach "Podcasts".
. "TAB" twice to reach the list of Podcasts.
. Use the "UP/DOWN ARROW" keys to focus upon a Podcast which has not
been expanded.
. Ask a sighted person to position the mouse pointer on the button
denoting the expand/collapse state of a Podcast, denoted as a small grey
triangle to the left of the Podcast name, usually at pixel position 176.
. When the mouse is positioned on the image, use any one of the five
"Control Training" keys, "CONTROL+SHIFT+1 THROUGH 5".
. The location will be permanently stored.
. A Dialogue Box will then appear, asking what you would like JAWS to
say when you press the corresponding "Control Locator Key". Type a short
phrase into the Edit Box and press "ENTER".
. The phrase you have chosen will be confirmed as being assigned to
the keystroke.
. Finally, to test your newly created keystroke, press the
corresponding "Control Locator" Key, "CONTROL+SHIFT+F1 THROUGH F5". So if
you had trained the position with "CONTROL+SHIFT+1", the corresponding
"Locator Key" would be "CONTROL+SHIFT+F1".
This procedure can be applied to the "Get Now" button to obtain a Podcast
episode if necessary, the "Buy Track" Button in the Music Store, or indeed
any other graphical image you wish to activate. As you update to each new
release of the iTunes Accessible Interface, your keystrokes will be stored
so there is no need to re-assign them. This is assuming that you do not
remove the file entitled "iTunes.ini" from your JAWS settings directory,
since this is where the keystrokes and phrases are recorded.
Training the Colours of Podcast Episodes
Now we are able to expand a Podcast to reveal its episodes, you may need to
train the colours so that JAWS can read them out. Remember, only do this if
JAWS is not reading out the Podcast episodes now they are expanded.
. Place the JAWS Cursor on a Podcast episode.
. Press "ITUNES MODIFIER+Z". JAWS will confirm that the colours have
been trained, and will advise you to close iTunes, then re-launch it so that
JAWS can see the colours you have trained.
If You Still Have Problems with JAWS Not Reading Podcasts Which Have Not
Been Downloaded
If you still have problems in this area, you can either:
. Preferably train the item as a Highlight Colour within JAWS for
Windows, using its own Custom Highlight Assign tool for doing this.
Technical Support to resolve this problem is available if you have purchased
a copy of the scripts.
. Alternatively, a more immediate solution is to focus upon the list
of Podcasts, then press the "List Key" ("ITUNES MODIFIER+L"), followed by
"ITUNES MODIFIER+UP/DOWN ARROW"to move through the available Podcasts.
