Hi Steve

Everything that Anna says is of course perfectly correct. I don't know how new to using iPods you are, but if you have lots of MP3 files and you want to transfer those to your iPod, I really would not bother using iTunes. Just transfer to the player using windows explorer. You can then generate MP3 clips which speak the file names rather than spelling them.

Best of luck.

Hi Steve,

You can boot the iPod into either Rockbox or the Apple firmware. So
you can play any iTunes files you want, but if those files are
protected or are in a format Rockbox doesn't play, you have to switch
to the Apple firmware to play them. If you use the Apple firmware,
accessing the iPod is identical to what it's like when Rockbox isn't
on the player.

If you have tracks in your iPod that Rockbox can play, such as
unprotected AAC files, and you used iTunes to transfer them to the
iPod, you can only play them in Rockbox if you use the database
instead of the file browser. That's because Apple uses odd naming
conventions which result in the files being impossible to find using
the file browser. The database can access them by reading their ID3
tags, however.

You can make MP3 clips that allow the file browser to speak file and
folder names. This doesn't work in the database though; everything
has to be spelled. If you don't mind having artist, track, and album
names spelled out, the database is accessible. At least it was before
all the changes of the past few days; I haven't loaded a current
build yet so don't know whether there are any changes to database
accessibility.

I hope that makes sense. If not, ask again, and I or someone will try to help.

Cheers,
Anna
