Geetha, without iTunes I am confused as to how you manage to copy
files to or from your iPod, since I am fairly new to the iPod
universe.
In Windows Explorer, I do see the iPod as a drive. But I do not see
any reference to the part of the iPod that would contain MP3 or other
multimedia files. So I've always presumed I have to use iTunes or
Anapod Explorer to do file transfers.
Is there a hidden directory in the iPod drive that I must "unhide"
before I can manipulate these things using normal Windows
functionality with iPod?
I know that in Windows itself, certain key directories such as
"Application Data" within my user profiles are hidden unless I take a
specific step in the command line to make them visible in Windows
Explorer.

Hi Anna,
I have never used ITunes, but am able to transfer files to my iPod with
USB
2.0 speed.
I have never booted into the Apple firmware so far and have always used
Rockbox.
I copied about 20GB of files to the iPod recently, and it happend in very
quick time. I also connect my iPod to the PC and sometimes directly play
files from it using Winamp just as I would play from a CD or a pen drive.
That works fine, too.

Hi Kane,
I think the way it works is that if you ever connect the iPod to a
computer
running iTunes, you have to configure disk use, etc. However, if you
never
connect to a computer running iTunes, the iPod gets recognized as a disk
by
the PC. Several people on this list have used Rockbox on iPods without
ever
using iTunes, and they say it works. What I don't know is whether it's
possible to transfer using USB 2.0 without using iTunes. Whenever I
transfer
anything to the iPod, even when I'm using Windows Explorer, I boot to the
Apple firmware so I can take advantage of its USB 2.0 capability. Can
someone who has never used iTunes with their iPod tell us whether it's
possible to do this, or whether you have to transfer everything at the
slower disk mode rate?
Cheers,
Anna
