Hi Jeff,
If you run Rockbox on an iPod (the Nano, Video, and some others), you
can change the pitch of the file, meaning the speed. You can get it
considerably faster - I think twice as fast or more - but since the
pitch increases as well, it would be hard to listen as fast as you
would with speech compression. The Nano can also speed up Audible
books to some degree with compression using the built-in Apple
firmware. If you set it up to click through the speaker and
headphones, you can navigate the menus on the Nano, though you have
to remember what the songs and books are. Running Rockbox, however,
everything talks, so that works out well.
As for speeding up MP3s, I have used GoldWave to do this very
successfully. You can speed up the file and have the pitch increase,
or you can speed it up with the pitch staying the same. The latter
takes quite a bit of processing time, but it's quite good. Once you
speed up the file, you save it and can load it into the player of your choice.
Cheers,
Anna
