I love love my Olympus!!! It has a very good internal mike, or you can
always hook an external stereo mike in. And wma can easily be converted and
listened to on the ipod.

Mic

Hi,

I never used my iPod video for recording, though I did consider it. You have
to buy a third party recording accessory that has a mic. There are three
that I know of, the Belkin TuneTalk Stereo, the Griffin iTalk Pro, and the
Xtreme Mac Micro Memo. Each has advantages and disadvantages...and I am only
going off research I have done online.

From everything I have read, using the iPod video for recording is not a
very good idea. Some of these mics pick up noise from the iPod's hard disc
spinning up, and they eat up the iPod's battery very quickly. Add to that,
that recordings made on the iPod are saved in WAV format until you get them
back on your computer, at which point you could probably transcode them to a
smaller filetype like mp3.

So my suggestion is: forget it and get an Olympus DS-30/40/50. That way
you'll have something that is very accessible and is excellent that you can
use for recording, and you can use your iPod for playing music and not have
to have huge recordings taking up valuable HD space.

Subject: [blindipod] iPod Video Basics: Recording and Installation of Mic

OK, I've learned a lot about the use of iPod Video as a player. But
now I want to use this device to record in the field: specifically, a
meeting in which I participate or a speech I am delivering.

I understand how to enter RECORD mode, how to find a file I've been
recording, and even how to determine what file type the recording is
in. But my question is more basic than this: What type of mic must I
use to captur what is going on in a room and where do I plug it into
the iPod Video? The only slot I can see for a mini male plug is the
headphone jack, which is by its very nature an output jack. And the
unique design of the USB slot on the back end of the iPod accommodates
just the custom-built charger cord that connects it to a PC. Unless
I'm really missing something simple here, it doesn't seem to
accommodate any type of normal or mini USB connector. So is there a
limitation on what type of mic I use or is there a certain adapter
needed to plug it in?

Thaks to all.
