Hi, Chris. I see that you have received no answer, so here goes. I'll help
you with this disclaimer: If any of my instructions are wrong, it is due to
the fact that I have not installed Rockbox for a long while. This message
is to try and assist you to get it up and running on your iPod video. That
having been said, do the following. Go to http://www.rockbox.org. Find the
section for current builds or daily builds. Go here and find the zipped
archive for your iPod video. Plug your iPod video into your pc's usb port.
Make sure you can recognize the drive in Windows Explorer. Now, get the
manual from the same area that you got the daily build. You may have to
sarch a bit, but if you know your screen reafder's cursor keys and you know
how to successfully navigate the web, you'll find it. It tells you to
download the iPodpatcher program. Download this, and put it in a safe
place. Now, unzip the file you downloaded for Rockbox. Unzip it into the
root of your iPod. It should create a folder called .rockbox and it should
be the only thing that unzips. This is very different than how it used to
be, but that's how it's done as I remember it. Now, run the iPodpatcher
program from where you saved it. This is also different. You used to have
to run it from a command prompt, but it is a Windows program now. It runs
fine, and if it detects your iPod, you can terminate it by hitting enter.
This creates all the necessary firmware changes and all that is necessary
for running Rockbox on your iPod video. Now, go to Brian's page, find the
page on iPods and find the link to the voice software. Find the voice you
want and download it. It will unzip into a file with a .voice extension.
If need be, change the name to english.voice and load it into the
.rockbox\langs folder of your iPod. Now, this file must be called
english.voice, so if it has another name, change it appropriately. Re-boot
your iPod into Rockbox by holding down the center button and pressing the
wheel at the 12:00 position, or the top nearest the display. Wait about
five seconds and you should hear speech. Rockbox is up and running, and
you're good to go. To get back to the Apple firmware, press the hold switch
to the right while holding down the top of the wheel, again, nearest the
display. This is the Menu key. You wait five seconds again, and you'll be
in the Apple firmware with no speech. There you have it, as best as I
remember it. I trust that this is helpful to someone, and I look forward to
hearing that your iPod is up and running. You will have a ball onfce you
have Rockbox the way you like it.
