Hi,
I am using a iPod NANO, if you look at one of these, you need to be sure
it's the first generation, as Rockbox doesn't work with the second gen
NANO's. Off the top of my head, I can't remember all the things Rockbox
supports, probably best to look at www.rockbox to see what they are
currently supporting. They support a couple of other brands as well, not
just iPods. another cool thing with Rockbox, if your like me and will be
reading audio books on it, is that you can speed up the naration. It is like
the old variable speed players, where it does make the voice more squeeky
the faster you go, but it's better than listening to a book at normal speed,
well at least for me.

not have to convert my ogg files into the audio file format in order to

it on the iPod?
If so, and if it plays both ogg and MP3 formats, I would certainly prefer
having a Rockbox-compatible iPod.
By the way, on which of the iPods can Rockbox be installed? Shuffle and
Nano
are ruled out I guess.
Also, do you already use an iPod with Rockbox which plays ogg files?

iPods natively don't play OGG files, but if you put rockbox on your iPod,
it
then will play ogg files. So if ogg is a priority for you, you will want
to
get an iPod that you can install rockbox on, that way you won't have to
convert your files.

I would however like to buy one very soon, which is why I am doing all

Which iPod model would you recommend?
Also, I am not much of a music fan, and would be using my iPod almost
exclusively for listening to audio books.
Does iPod Shuffle play audio books?
Finally, do any of the iPods play ogg files, or should the files always

converted to mp3 or audio book format?

Some things that might help you.
1. As you may know, the 4th generation iPod is now the 5th generation
iPod,
commonly called the iPod Video. I have one and love it. I tried using
rockbox, but I prefer the normal iPod interface because of the ability to
browse your library in different ways, and the fact that you don't have
to
reboot the iPod to play songs purchased from the iTunes Store, and I do
that
a lot. I don't have any vision at all and at least for me, the normal
interface isn't too hard to use once you get used to it. It does take me
a
little bit of searching to find a particular album I want to listen to,
but
it actually took me longer to find a certain song with rockbox. That's
probably just me, though.
Apple kind of re-released the video iPods in September. They kept the
30GB
one but replaced the 60GB with an 80GB. I could be wrong, but I believe
these, along with the aluminum iPod Nanos, don't work with rockbox.
2. If you are a JAWS user, iTunes is awesome with the scripts for it.
TandT recommends that you use iTunes version 6, which thankfully they
have
a
link to download on their website. However, if you have one of the newer
iPods I.E. the ones that came out in September 2006, you will need iTunes
7.0. I tried using the iTunes scripts on a friend's computer with iTunes
7.0 once, and it really confused me, so I don't' think I'll upgrade until
I
get another iPod.
3. As far as the audio books, I have a few on my iPod that I've added to
iTunes and my iPod from CD's. That is a good article, but I know of one
that I think is a bit more helpful. I don't remember the link off hand,
but
if you google something like iTunes and audio books you should find it.
It's something like aldablog on audio books. I used the steps from this
site when I converted my audio books and it worked great. One thing they
explain how to do is to combine all the tracks on each CD into one to
make
it easier to manage, and they also tell you how to rename the tracks so
that
you don't get disks of a book playing out of order although I haven't
done
that yet.
