Hi Barbara,
As far as I know, no MP3 players work with the iTunes store except
iPods. It used to be possible to transfer iTunes protected content to
non-iPods using RealPlayer, but it hasn't been for a couple of years.
My guess is that Apple made them stop, but that's just a guess. I
think what the blurb you quoted means is that the player works with
services like Napster and Overdrive.
