Do I need to have the ipod connected to do this.

Under the edit menu, there is preferences. In preferences there is a tab for
ipod. you can check or uncheck a box that says something like update
automatically. that will keep your ipod from updating when you don't want it
to. now you will have to tell it. there is an option in the file menu and
pressing shift+f10 on the ipod in the source list will also display an
update option. ~Merrill
