Hi Brian,.

I too am looking to purchase a mp3 player of sorts.

Which music sites can you download from to put on an iriver then?

When you say they don't support audible content, is that spoken word files?

What sites can't you use other than napster and can you use napster tracks on an ipod?

Trace

Subject: [blindipod] For Carol, which iPod

Hi

I was going to write the following yesterday when Carol originally raised
this subject, but unfortunately I was not able to.

Carol, the first thing really you or your husband need to think about is
whether you actually need an iPod at all. In my view, the best mainstream
player around for us as of today, from a file transfer and accessibility
perspective, is the iRiver H340 with Rockbox installed. This as you probably
know accommodates 40 GB of storage, it is easy to transfer files from a
computer to the device using any screen-reader, and the fact that Rockbox is
on the device means you get access to the menus. It also includes a
separate charging unit so you are not dependent upon charging the player
using USB connectivity.

You mentioned the ability to shuffle material. You can do this on the
iRiver, and one of the effective ways of doing this is to create a playlist
of lots of files using Winamp, transfer the .m3u file to the iRiver, and
invoke the Shuffle option within Rockbox, again very very accessible.
However you can for example ask Rockbox to shuffle the contents of an
individual folder.

The iRiver, or more particularly Rockbox, does not support Audible content,
so you should take that into consideration if you need to. In addition, the
iRiver and/or Rockbox firmware does not support protected WMA files, such as
those found on the Napster music site. But if you want to transfer MP3 or
unprotected WMA files to the unit, this in my view is certainly the way you
should go.

If it is an iPod you really want, presumably you either want this because of
its physical size or because it can play music purchased from Apple's own
music store or Audible content. The shuffle holds 512 MB or 1 GB as has
already been stated, and both units are very available. You cannot install
Rockbox on these units, however there is really no need as the layout is
quite straightforward. iTunes is required. You receive it on a CD with the
Shuffle, and you simply install it onto your PC. Unless you are
particularly adept at using your screen-reader's review mode, such as the
jaws cursor, you are probably going to want our jaws scripts for navigating
iTunes.

If you want Rockbox on an iPod right now, you probably want to go for the
new iPod Nano, but you are still quite limited in terms of the storage
capacity. I understand that Rockbox at the moment does not work on some of
the iPods with greater storage capacity, such as those which hold 30 or 60
GB of files.

So in summary, unless your file type needs are quite specific as outlined
above, my advice is to purchase one of the iRiver players supported by
Rockbox, probably the H320 or 40 as they are easier to acquire.
