Thanks Barbara. That was helpful and I saw the spec. I now need to
look at both the Apple and Iriver to see which I think would suit my
husband the best. <SMILE>
Don't worry, I'll get to use it too!

Carol
I am fairly new to Ipods, but here's what I've found.
I bought my Shuffle from amazon.co.uk from where you will get a good
spec. I also got one free when I signed up for membership of
audible.co.uk at L9 something a month, so now I have two!
I've just loaded some music onto mine using Itunes with the addition of
Brian's excellent JAWS Scripts and my 512 mb is currently holding 148
songs, well over the estimated 120 it is said to hold. The is a switch
at the back of the Shuffle which can be slid between Off, Play in order
or Play Randomly (Shuffle), so the tracks can be played in order.
I have only ever used the Shuffle and the fact that it does not have a
screen means you don't need to be able to see to use it. There are
probably more sophisticated models on the market, but for listening to
music or MP3 books, I've found the Shuffle suits my every need and it's
well priced as well
Hope this info is of some help.
Barbara

Subject: [blindipod] CHOOSING AN IPOD
Hi all,
I'm a newby around here too and really, apart from the use of our Book
Courier, I have no ipod experience or that of RockBox or Itunes.
So, first things first. What's the choice of ipods currently out there
which work pretty well, with the additional software, for totally blind
people?
Referring specifically to the Shuffle, I notice it only appears to hold
2GB which my husband doesn't think is enough for what he wants. Is this
right? I was looking for a spec for the Shuffle today but didn't find
this in the short time I had available. If anyone has the complete spec
to hand, I'd like to see it, please, or be directed to it.
From what I did see, the "Shuffle" does what it says - play items in
random. Does this mean, if you want to play items in some sort of
order, this is more difficult to achieve for us?
Finally, do you have any recommendations where the Shuffle can be
viewed? (Felt?)
Cheers and thanks for any answers you can give to this lot.
No doubt there will be more questions to come.
