yes files were renamed.
The manual suggest voicing of menus at least is set by default, so hence my
confusion as to no speach.

When you installed the language files, did you rename them to english.voice?
Also, if the player is sometimes recognized and sometimes not, I wonder if a
cable could be at fault.
