[birdky] Sabine's Gull (juv.)-- Honker Bay- 29 December 2006

Hello KYBirders,
This morning (29 December) between 9:30 and 11:30 AM, the juvenile
Sabine's Gull was actively feeding out towards the mouth of Honker Bay (Lake
Barkeley, Land between the Lakes SRA). It favored the far shoreline during the
entire time of observation. The bird was conspicuous among the Bonaparte's even
at a distance. As mentioned before, this young bird appears to lack any
first-winter, gray mantle feathers. Assuming this bird survives, it should
begin the molt into first-winter plumage in the near future. Molt in Sabine's
Gull occurs primarily after arriving on the wintering grounds, which is
normally off both coasts of South America. A very striking bird nonetheless,
and an equally unusual wintering occurrence for Kentucky.
