Andy Eller, Hap Chambers, and myself birded the Clarks River NWR in
Marshall and McCracken counties on December 17th.
We had 56 species on the NWR with a couple more in adjacent areas.
On or over NWR: Wood Duck; Gadwall; Great Blue Heron; Black Vulture;
Turkey Vulture; Red-shouldered Hawk; Red-tailed Hawk; American Kestrel;
Killdeer; Rig-billed Gull; Rock Pigeon; Mourning Dove; Barred Owl;
Belted Kingfisher; Woodpeckers: Red-headed, Red-bellied, Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker, Downy, Hairy, Northern Flicker, Pileated; Eastern Phoebe;
Blue Jay, American Crow; Horned Lark; Carolina Chickadee; Tufted
Titmouse; White-breasted Nuthatch; Brown Creeper; Carolina Wren; Winter
Wren; Golden-crowned Kinglet; Ruby-crowned Kinglet; Eastern Bluebird;
Hermit Thrush; American Robin; Northern Mockingbird; Brown Thrasher;
European Starling; Cedar Waxwing; Yellow-rumped Warbler; Eastern Towhee;
American Tree Sparrow; Field Sparrow; Savannah Sparrow; Fox Sparrow;
Song Sparrow; Swamp Sparrow; White-throated Sparrow; Dark-eyed Junco;
Lapland Longspur; Northern Cardinal; Red-winged Blackbird; Rusty
Blackbird; Common Grackle; and American Goldfinch.
There are some nice habitats on the NWR, but several management units
are in their infancy and probably need some "maturing" to attract more
waterfowl and marsh birds.
