[birdky] RPT: BBC/KOS Field Trip to Peabody WMA, 12/09/2006

First of all, let me apologize for not announcing the joint Beckham Bird
Club/KOS field trip to Peabody WMA last Saturday, December 9th, on
BIRDKY. Apparently I had failed to notice that the trip had not been
posted to the KOS web site, nor announced in a previous newsletter. In
large part due to that failure, we had mostly BBC members on the trip
and failed to meet up with three intrepid KOS members until late in the
day. Fortunately all had a good time on a beautiful, if not frigid,
early December day.
The main group had 74 species with three more added by Hap, Melissa, and
Roseanna in the Sinclair/Paradise area (American Bittern, Black-crowned
Night-Heron, and Lesser Scaup). After David's post last week about few
Red-tails, we kept closer track of our day list on raptors ... in nearly
50 miles wandering from Beaver Dam to Sinclair we had 19 Red-tails
(which seemed about normal to me); 1 Cooper's; 1 Red-shouldered; 1 dark
morph Rough-legged Hawk (over Homestead area); 10 Northern Harriers (may
have been conservative); and 6 American Kestrels. Other highlights
included all the interesting things reported in recent weeks from the
WMA including the Ross's Goose at Island Lake, Homestead Unit; the Eared
Grebe (great looks) at the main lake at the Paradise Steam Plant; and
nice looks at Short-eared Owls, which came up a little before sunset. A
nice array of dabblers on South Lake at Homestead included Green-winged
Teal, Northern Shoveler, and Northern Pintail. We also ran into some
nice passerines including multiple Hermit Thrush, Brown Thrasher, Fox
Sparrow and Ruby-crowned Kinglet, along with a single Eastern Phoebe.
