I encountered only 12 redtails today while covering
204 miles of good to prime habitat (farmland/reclaimed
strip mines) in Warren, Butler, Ohio, and Muhlenberg
Counties. The low number or redtails has been
apparent for the past 3 weeks or so in this part of
the state. Four of the birds today were in a small
area on the Sinclair Unit and only 1 was observed on
the Ohio County units of the Peabody WMA. One was
present on the WKU farm in Bowling Green. That leaves
only 6 for the remainder of the trip...few and far
between.
Frank Lyne and I encountered at least 6 in the area of
a recently harvested soybean field in Todd County last
week as previously reported, but we saw almost no
others during our trip through prime habitat. Newly
harvested soybean fields are a magnet for redtails as
removing the cover leaves the prey for relatively easy
pickin's. It will be interesting to see what numbers
are like on upcoming Christmas Counts.
