December 26, 2004: There were 200 to 300 ring-billed gulls at the Stony
Cove Recreation Area adjacent to the dam of Cave Run Lake today. At
least that many Canada geese were present there as well. At one point
all the resting gulls on shore (about 100) burst into the air as a
cooper's hawk flew overhead. On the downstream side of the dam at the
outflow, the ring-billed gulls put on quite a show of fish catching in
the swift water just beyond the concrete walls. Our 2-year old enjoyed
watching the action and clapping each time a fish was plucked from the
roiling water. An adult bald eagle soared over the dam and down the
Licking River. Two immature bald eagles were perched along the Licking
River downstream of the dam as well.
