[birdky] Bowling Green CBC & Recent Highlights
- From: David Roemer <dlroemer@xxxxxxxxx>

The Bowling Green CBC was held on December 19, and at
least 76 species were recorded that I'm aware of. Tom
Durbin and I covered the southern part of the circle
which included Griffin Park, the Western Ky.
University Farm, and the Woodburn/Richpond area.
The arriving cold front on that date produced a nice
influx of birds, most apparent being waterfowl, gulls,
and larks/longspurs, all of which several flocks were
observed migrating. Temperatures fell throughout the
day from a morning high of around 30 to 20 degrees by
dusk, with NNW winds at 25-35 mph.
The Selasphorus hummingbird present in Bowling Green
was recorded by the hosts for a great count bird.
Sandhill Cranes were observed by one count party.
Other highlights which were recorded by Tom and me
include:
Cackling Goose 7 Griffin Park
Blue-winged Teal female at McElroy Lake/Woodburn
Red-tailed Hawk
"Harley" the light-morph harlani present on the WKU
Farm for the 4th consecutive winter.
Adult light-morph calurus along McElwain Road where
probably the same bird wintered last year.
Ring-billed Gull 136 with most accumulating at
McElroy by noon.
Loggerhead Shrike
American Pipit 40+
Palm Warbler
Chipping Sparrow 2 in my yard
Savannah Sparrow 19+
Lapland Longspur 47
There had been very few ducks at the transient lakes
with only a handful of Mallards being observed at
McElroy during the few days it has had water. Tom and
I arrived there mid-late morning and only a few ducks
were present as well as 15 RB Gulls. In less than an
hour there were a few hundred ducks and 136 RB Gulls
present. Tom and I left to cover a few more areas
planning to spend at least the last hour of daylight
back at McElroy going through the birds. We returned
about 3pm to find only hunters, NO birds.
Other recent birding highlights include:
12-13
Bonaparte's Gull 500+ Barren
12-16
Pine Siskin my yard Warren Co.
Am Pipit 140 McElroy
RB Gull 25+ McElroy

12-20
Chipping Sparrow 2 Barren
Savannah Sparrow 4 Barren
Cackling Goose 9 Griffin Park/Warren
Pied-billed Grebe
This bird was present on Drakes Creek in my backyard.
Although not usually the most exciting species
observed during a day, this is the first time I've
ever been able to look out my bedroom window and see
one.
12-23
Sandhill Crane one flyover yard/Warren
Chipping Sparrow 21 yard
Fox Sparrow 3 yard
Adult and juv gambelii White-crowned Sparrow still
