[birdky] Sloughs report

I did another of my western Henderson Co. birding tours this morning
(12/21).

Tundra Swans: again none spotted at Sauerheber on my way out at 7AM.
But on my way back by there were 18 sitting on the ice north of 268. I
guess they spend the night deeper in sloughs then move back to this
location during the day?

Canada geese numbers are still not up, although there are quite a few.
a few Snow geese (maybe 25)
Many white fronted geese (probably 200)
Mallards are most numerous ducks
a few Shovelers
a few Black ducks
some Widgeons
a few coots
green-wing teal numbers have fallen since last week
I haven't seen any Blue-wing Teal since early fall.
I didn't see any Ring-necks like I did a week ago.

I saw my first winter wrens this season at Highland Creek unit.

Sunday I was out also and saw a Killdeer wading in the unfrozen
shallows with ice gaiters!
But I saw no Tundras Sunday.

There has been an ongoing discussion of Bluejay numbers. I've seen them
at my feeder and in the woods; doesn't seem to be a dearth of them.

But, I haven't seen any Yellow-rumps since very early fall. I used to
see a lot of them accompanying chickadees and titmice (-mouses?).

Well I filled my feeders and put out new suet. So I guess I'm ready for
our predicted big snow.

Charlie
Henderson Co.
