Monday's CBC was COLD but productive. We turned up 62 species, which is good
for this county with almost no open water. It was a great day for raptors,
including 15 red-tailed hawks, 23 kestrels, 1 harrier, 2 cooper's, 3
sharp-shinned, 2 red-shouldered, and 1 adult bald eagle. Also of interest were
4 cranes, 64 turkeys, 22 blue jays, 45 bluebirds, 1 shrike, 86 cardinals, and 8
purple finches. This was the 19th year for this count, and during the first 10
years or so we rarely turned up white-crowned sparrows. They've been increasing
radically over the past 5 years, with a record high 95 yesterday. We had no
grackles or waxwings, but otherwise most of the usual suspects were found.
