A few other nice birds on the LBL CBC yesterday are the following:
2 Thayer's Gulls below Kentucky Dam, 1 first winter and 1 adult
1 Lesser Black-backed Gull (adult) below Kentucky Dam
At Least 35 American White Pelicans on Lake Barkley
1 Brown Thrasher in Lyon County
There were not an abundance of gulls below either dam. Water was
churning Kentucky Dam at a furious pace, perhaps too furiously. The TN
river was out of bank below the dam and the lakes were at or near summer
pool, rather than winter pool. This make for a shortage of "bars" for
loafing gulls etc on the lakes themselves. Apparently the Gulls are
either well distributed over the lakes or still further north waiting on
winter weather to possibly arrive in Kentucky this year.

Bill Lisowsky originally sent this to birdky yesterday
evening but wasn't sure if it would be posted since he
doesn't subscribe. I told him I would forward it if
it wasn't, and after checking recent postings this
morning and not seeing it, I've forwarded his message.
Sorry if it comes through later as a duplicate.

It was a beautiful day to be out at LBL (which it
often is--but then again you shoud know that I'm
pretty biased) and the birds were especially
cooperative. An immature Pacific Loon was in Demumbers
Bay, which is reached by heading east on Road 108 off
the Trace. It was in the company of a Common Loon
which provided handy comparison. This is a smaller,
very light headed loon and with good light should be
obvious if it is around. I left it at noon today, due
east (straight out) from the boat ramp. I think the
waterfowl numbers are up from last week, but with duck
hunters out, all the waterbirds are bunched up as you
might expect. Among the big groups of Bufflehead and
Lesser Scaup out from Nickell Branch Lake Access I
turned up four Red-breasted Mergansers, 1 Common Merg
and 6 Ruddy Ducks.
My other highlights today included a young Golden
Eagle that was perched on the east side of the Trace
near the Moss Landing turnoff. There were two
Red-tailed Hawks and an American Kestrel harassing it
and when it took off it began soaring towards the
east. There were a few Rusty Blackbirds near the
spring west of this same intersection.
