Today's Grayson Co./Nolin Lake CBC was spearheaded by my buddy John Brittain.
His computer is on the blink, so I'll report highlights; details will appear in
a future issue of our newsletter, I'm sure. We had a great morning, followed by
a very windy afternoon. My favorite bird of the day was a light phase
rough-legged hawk. I don't have exact numbers, but we saw 40 + ring-billed
gulls, 5 or 6 Bonaparte's gulls, 3 harriers, well over 100 turkey vultures,
probably 80-100 black vultures, 3 cooper's hawks, 8 snipe, maybe 15 kestrels, 1
blue jay (!), and 50 - 100 rusty blackbirds in a mixed flock. Big misses (when
I left them about 3:30) included towhees, pigeons and house sparrows. No
shrikes or cedar waxwings to be found and 1 yellow-rumped warbler. Once the
wind kicked up we were in trouble.
It was a great day to be out.
