In between farming chores today, I stopped in at the Reformatory Lake near
La Grange, Oldham County, for a quick scan of the waterfowl. Among some 500+
Canada Geese are already at least 35 birds that are about 1/2 the size of
most of the others, with stubby bills and steep foreheads. Some are pale
with very obvious light edgings on the back feathers; some are quite a bit
darker in body color. I assume these birds are Cackling Geese but must admit
to not being sure. They are not as tiny as Mallards.
Other waterfowl included 75+ Mallards, 2 Am Black Ducks, 10+ Gadwall, 5+ No
Shovelers, 10+ Green-wg Teal, 2 Lesser Scaup and a Ring-necked Duck.
On the family farm in Jefferson County, I flushed a flock of 40-50 Chipping
Sparrows out of one of the Indian grass fields.
