December 28, 2002:

The Olmstead CBC was held today with 3 participants, Frank Lyne, David
Roemer, and me.  The count produced 66 species to tie for 2nd place in the
10 year history of the count with 1998.  Individual totals were well below
average, due in part to low numbers of blackbirds and reduced numbers of
Horned Larks.  Frank and I also blame David Roemer for part of this.  David
chose to empty his stomach contents onto Logan County soil about 1:30 PM and
had to be taken to Russellville so he could go home.  Frank and I had mixed
feelings about this as the delay caused us to see the only Eastern Phoebe of
the Day and allowed us to get rid of David.  On the down side, we missed
about 30 minutes of good counting driving David back to Russellville from
near Allensville.

There were no really good birds on the count.  Besides the Eastern Phoebe,
other nice birds/totals included 3 Cooper's Hawks, 2 Eurasian
Collared-Doves, 3 Eastern Screech Owls, 3 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 5
Loggerhead Shrikes (a tie for count record), 235 Horned Larks, 1 Hermit
Thrush, 15 American Pipits, 6 Fox Sparrows, 2 Winter Wrens, and 34 Lapland
Longspurs.

Missed species included Wilson's (Common) Snipe and Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

Other notes of possible interest:

*  About 1/2 of the individuals observed were European Starlings,
*  Corvid numbers were NOT down more than most other common species,
*  Only 5 American Robins were observed within the count circle,
*  Consistent winds and warmish weather seemed to make finding bird somewhat
difficult.

That concludes this report.  Both Frank and I hope that David recovers fully
and quickly from his ailment.
