December 23, 2002:

I visited Lake Peewee, north of Madisonville, this day looking for the
Pacific Loon observed by David Roemer late last week.  Regrettably, there
were no Loons present.

However, the viewing conditions were excellent with water and air
temperatures being about the same, heat distortion was minimal; the partly
cloudy sky produced a nice soft light; and the wind was not blowing so the
water was like glass.

I did not count individuals, but in approximate order of number observed,
the following species were seen.

Ruddy Duck
American Coot
Bufflehead
Pied-billed Grebe
Hooded Merganser
Ring-billed Gull
Mallard
Red-breasted Merganser
Gadwall
Great Blue Heron
American Black Duck
Red-tailed Hawk

PS:  On December 21st, while chatting with my brother outside, I observed an
adult Krider's Red-tailed Hawk flying over a field adjacent to my parents
home in Metropolis, IL.  Too bad it is not a full species.
