The first stop of the day was at a flooded field along
hwy 268 at the Sloughs Wildlife Mangagement Area in
Henderson County.  The Trumpeter Swans were not
present this morning, but in their place were 19
Tundra Swans, including 4 juveniles.  I spent about an
hour studying and photographing the birds, most of
which they spent sleeping.  

A drive around the open country in Henderson and Union
Counties revealed some interesting Red-tailed Hawks. 
At least 3 light-morph calurus were present, as was a
beautiful adult calurus/krideri intergrade.  This bird
had a whitish head with a dark eye stripe, a lightly
marked belly band, and a banded tail with the basal
half white and the outer half pale reddish.  It lacked
the sooty upper parts typical of light-morph harlani. 


A quick check of the Homestead Unit of the Peabody WMA
in Ohio County this afternoon turned up both light and
dark Rough-legged Hawks, as well as the Merlin and
Ross's Goose along Union Hill Road which were first
seen on a KOS/Beckham fieldtrip last weekend.
