The Wildlife Resources Division, Nongame Conservation Section
(NCS), announces a vacancy for a Wildlife Biologist 1 (ornithologist).
The position is full-time. The position will be located at the NCS
Brunswick Office, Glynn County. Position Number is 00168811.
Job Responsibilities
1) Design, implement, and coordinate long-term monitoring projects for
waterbirds, Swallow-tailed Kites, Painted Buntings, as well as other
bird species of conservation concern and their habitats.
2) Work with coastal land managers, private citizens, state and federal
government biologists, as well as nongovernmental organization employees
to maintain, and/or recover, local and migratory bird populations using
management techniques, conservation initiatives, and state regulation.
3) Participate in both national and state committees and working groups
that address issues related to bird conservation. This participation
will include travel within and outside of Georgia.
Manage budgets and prepare reports related to specific projects and
contracts.
4) Assist in other coastal Nongame Conservation Section projects
involving marine mammals, sea turtles, and an on-call biologist rotation
that will include response on some designated weekends.
5) Respond to public phone inquiries including calls about nuisance
wildlife.
6) Provide information about birds and bird conservation to the public
through media outlets.
7) Assist in Nongame Conservation Section annual fund raising events.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a Master of Science degree in Wildlife Management,
Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Science, or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum qualifications, plus:
At least three years of professional experience working on bird
conservation projects.
Knowledge of the species composition and environmental characteristics
of the natural communities of the Georgia coast.
Expertise in bird identification, census techniques, and assessments of
productivity.
Proficiency with databases, spreadsheets, word processing software, GPS
and GIS.
Experienced in quantitative data analysis, experimental and study design
methods, statistical and spatial data analysis; database management,
technical report and publication preparation Excellent written and oral
communication skills including experience presenting research results at
professional meetings.
Proficiency using 17-30 foot powerboats in tidally influenced marine and
estuarine environments.
Experience working in remote field situations under adverse weather
conditions including high heat and humidity.
Salary
$41,808.96 / year, Pay Grade 17
