Now that November has arrived, lingering hummingbirds are quickly
becoming more likely to be western strays. Today, I banded two Rufous
Hummingbirds in Oldham and Shelby counties; the former was a bright
hatch-year male and the latter was a hatch-year female. This morning the
yard of the Oldham County host, Sue Massey, was alive with birds
including several Pine Siskins, a female Purple Finch, and a few
Chipping Sparrows.The Shelby County bird is at the home of Don & Linda
Dott who hosted an adult female Rufous LAST YEAR from late October to
mid-November! A third Rufous record came to light earlier this week in
an email I received from Carol Barker, who lives down on Nolin Lake; she
sent along a few nice photos of an adult male Rufous Hummingbird that
had been at her place during the first week of October with the
lingering Ruby-throateds.
 
As long as I am mentioning lingering birds ... last night while setting
up the owl nets on the family farm in Jefferson County, Mark Monroe and
I watched a Common Nighthawk for at least 10 minutes as it foraged
overhead.
