I got back from a short trip to Chicago and Miller Beach on the Indiana shore,
which was unusually slow but managed to see distant Snow buntings, Scoters and
a Peregrine over downtown Chicago and a call I suspect was a flyover redpoll( I
only had 2 hours to bird.) I went to the Falls of the Ohio this morning and
the Indiana "harbor." I found almost no activity on the river, but a few gulls
at the Falls. I am starting to believe I had a California Gull in with some
ring-bills. I just couldn't get enough light on the bird and don't have a
powerful enough scope. It seemed to be slightly darker on the back and have a
good amount of white on the secondary edges but I had to leave for work and did
not think to factor in the dark eye. I knew something looked a little
different about it but I couldn't place it. I think maybe it was the eye
throwing me off and didn't even realize it. I have had so little luck or
experience with gulls. If anyone has a chance before the day is over they
should go and see if it still there. I do not know its migration patterns so I
might be wrong but...
