Mary Yandell and I got great looks at a swallow this afternoon. We believe
it to be a very late n. rough-winged swallow. Videotaped it in flight for a
few seconds. The bird was actively swooping around and then rested in a
tree to preen for a minute or so. Seen along the upper levee road just
south of Ash Log Road (west of Hickman along the Mississippi River). Good
looks at the bird in binoculars and in scope as it perched: brownish back
and throat with blurry brown underwings, not distinctly delineated from the
white belly. Square tail.
Another noteworthy bird in the area today was a possible hybrid goose, near
the observation platform at the Long Point unit of Reelfoot: goose was seen
among several dozen greater white-fronted geese. Only saw the bird briefly
before it walked behind some weeds. Considerable white on neck and head.
Maybe a greater white-fronted / snow goose hybrid???
