I just got back from a week at Club Med on the Islands of Turks & Caicos in
the Caribbean. It wasn't a birding trip, mostly a snorkeling and relaxing
trip, but we saw some nice birds without having to make much effort.
Several were life birds for me. I thought I'd share the list:
Ruddy Turnstone
Sanderlings
Cattle Egret
Mourning Dove
Black and White Warbler
Yellow-Throated Warbler
Cape May Warbler
Mangrove Cuckoo
Gray Kingbird
Bananaquit
American Oystercatcher
Tri-colored Heron
Common Ground Dove
We had several dolphin encounters during our snorkeling adventures, we saw
barracuda and many other reef fish. We also took a see kayaking ecotour and
visited a small cay that hosts an endangered iguana. So it turned out to be
a nice wildlife trip in spite of our not having planned it that way.
The Ruddy Turnstones and Sanderlings weren't earning their hard living in
the usual respectable way; instead they were hanging out at the Club Med
trying to score handouts from the tourists. We saw several fights over a
breakfast sausage someone tossed to them.
