The past few days have seen decent flights of
waterbirds occurring with up to 500+ individuals
resting on Barren Reservoir. Although no rarities
have been present, a nice assortment of birds has
been. Mallard, Gadwall, Lesser Scaup, and Ring-necked
Ducks have been especially numerous. Species observed
include:
Canada Goose
Green-winged Teal
Am Black
Mallard
N Pintail
N Shoveler
Gadwall
Am Wigeon
Redhead
Ring-necked
Lesser Scaup
Bufflehead
Red-breasted Merganser
Hooded Merganser
Ruddy
Common Loon with 34 on Nov 17
Pied-billed Grebe
Horned Grebe
DC Cormorant
Bald Eagle 2 adults on Nov 17
Increase in Ring-billed and Bonaparte's Gull numbers
Dunlin on Nov 14 at Bailey's Point
This afternoon (Nov 18) was spent birding southern
Warren County for raptors and field birds. A flock of
90 pipits was present near Woodburn as were two other
large mixed flocks of larks and pipits, one including
a few Lapland Longspurs.
I checked the WKU Farm for the return of the light
harlani to his winter territory and he was again
present with his mate. This is his fifth winter on
the farm and at least the second for the same female
accompanying him. I find it fascinating how
consistent these birds are in their plumage every
year.
Joanie last saw our female Ruby-throated Hummer on Nov
11.
That concludes this report.
