I was able to make a brief stop to check the Ohio River at Louisville late
this afternoon. There were small numbers of waterfowl on the river at the
usual spots. I am positive that this was the FIRST day in more than 30 years
of looking at the river at Louisville that Northern Shovelers outnumbered
all other waterfowl species! Flocks of waterfowl were noted at the Falls of
the Ohio, just above McAlpine Dam, and above the Big-Four bridge:

Green-winged Teal 5+
Northern Shoveler 105+ (individual flocks of 29+18+54+4)
Gadwall 30+
Mallard 50+
Lesser Scaup ca. 10
Greater Scaup 1 female
Bufflehead 6
Hooded Merganser 10
Ruddy Duck 3
American Coot ca. 25

On the Falls rockshelves were 4 species of gulls:

3 ad. Franklin's
6+ Bonapartes
3 Herring
ca. 50 Ring-billed.

Only a couple of hundred cormorants remained from what Alan Goldstein
considered to be about 1,000 yesterday. Also, at least 4 Great Egrets remain
at the Falls ... this is the latest I have ever seen them in the Louisville
area.
