Subject: New ecoregional bird checklist (South Texas Brushlands)
Greetings,
A new booklet by Texas Partners in Flight based at the Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department (TPWD) has just been released titled "Birds of the South
Texas Brushlands: A Field Checklist" by John C. Arvin. The author, who now
works for the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory, has over five decades of
experience traveling and studying the birdlife in this diverse ecoregion.
Many of you were in the ecoregion for the last SE PIF meeting in February of
this year.
This new checklist, that includes monthly abundance codes for each species,
is a 20-page booklet that is the sixth (of seven) in a series of ecoregional
checklists for Texas. The list of birds for this ecoregion is incredibly
diverse and totals 529 species. This is more than any other state in the
U.S. except California or Texas as a whole.
Please note that this is a 'checklist' and does not include pictures of
birds or places to go birding. You can get a free copy of it by sending a
self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) with two first-class stamps on it to:
Cliff Shackelford
Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept
3000 IH-35 South, Suite 100
Austin, Texas 78704
This must be a 6x9" clasp or self-adhesive envelope for the booklet to fit.
Simply fold your empty SASE envelope and send it in a legal-sized envelope
with one first-class stamp on it. There are other SASE orders trickling in,
so please write "South Texas Checklist" somewhere obvious.
This free offer expires on 15 December 2005 at which time a $1 donation to
the "TPWD Nongame Fund" will need to be included with the SASE directions
listed above. This donation will enable us to reprint when we're
out-of-stock -- thanks for helping us maintain our outreach and education
efforts.
