[birdky] Management of Water Level on the Kentucky Lake/Lake Barkley system

BIRDKY Subscribers:

The US Army Corp of Engineers is again considering extending the summer pool
level on the connected Kentucky Lake/Lake Barkley waterway system. The level
of both bodies of water must be essentially the same due to the canal that
connects them just above the dams.

Extending the summer pool as proposed would have a negative impact (according
to the government's own study) on shorebirds as they migrate through Kentucky.
This impact would occur as mud flats such as Blood River and Jonathan Creek
(along with numerous smaller spits and island flats) would remain under water
for more of the shorebird migration season. Similar locations occur in
Tennessee near Paris Landing and Dover and would be similarly affected.

Rough details of this plan are available in a letter posted on the KOS web site
at http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos/scopingnotice.pdf. The KOS Board has
officially voted to go on the record in opposition to this proposed extension
of the summer pool.

I urge each subscriber to inform himself/herself using the link above and all
other available information. I further urge you to use the contact information
in the letter to make your voice heard. Contact by as many individuals as
possible to add their support to the KOS voice is imperative.

KOS is non-partison and is essentially an apolitical organization. However, it
should and has gone on the record for this important issue that directly
affects birds in Kentucky.

Thanks to all subscribers taking the time to consider this request.

Mark Bennett, President
Kentucky Ornighological Society
