I've been on the farm in Jefferson County much of the past week; birding
opportunities have been quite limited, but I have encountered a few things.
October 28th I heard a Purple Finch fly over (interestingly the same day
David Roemer first reported one in Bowling Green). There have been a few
Vesper Sparrows around for about two weeks, along with many Savannahs and
Chippings. On October 29 and 30, we kept flushing a single very fat Bobolink
out of the Indian grass fields during harvesting operations.  This was a
sizable bird and probably a male, who sometimes really struggled to get
flying it was so heavy, getting ready for the LONG flight to South America.
Over the same two-day period we flushed a few Sedge Wrens and probably a
Marsh Wren and at least a couple of unID'd Ammodramus sparrows. There has
been a lot of Red-breasted Nuthatch activity around the house this week ...
it seems like most years a major movement of Red-breasteds occurs it is
obvious by sometime in September, but the increase in reports over the past
week or so makes me think that maybe a big influx has just arrived in recent
days.
