[birdky] RPT: Northern Shrike Nov 20th

The only thing I can add is that after six of us watched the bird for over
an hour, finding it relatively easily every time we watched for it after
losing it momentarily during foraging moves, the bird disappeared on us and
for the next 3 hours or so, it couldn't be found again, and as far as I know
was not seen again this afternoon! It was in a tree, just like the couple of
dozen or more we had seen it in and then 'poof,' it vanished. We have no
idea if it remained SE of the S1-S2 junction and just became more reclusive,
went over a rise and into an adjacent area that was not as accessible, or
bolted for an entirely new area. I guess the message is . . . feel
fortunate if you are able to find it . . . and be sure to keep up with it's
movements every step of the way. It would probably be good if people who go
and refind it be sure to note where it is seen for the benefit of others.

Other observations of which I am aware from the Sinclair Unit today include
the following: dark morph adult Rough-legged "Buzzard" [Roly was around to
entertain us :o)], a flyover flock of about 35 Lapland Longspurs, Hooded
Merg, Red-breasted Merg, Dunlin and Great Egret at the ash ponds, at least 2
Pine Siskins in the sunflower fields on the S3 loop, a Short-eared Owl at
dusk and an unfortunate bobcat lying in the back of someone's pickup truck

Subject: [birdky] Northern Shrike- yes

Brainard just asked me to post that the Northern
Shrike has been present for at least an hour today at
the Sinclair Unit in Muhlenberg County. It is,
however, in a slightly different location than
previously reported. It has been seen in the valley
just SE of the intersection of S1-S2, perhaps half a
mile to a mile west of its previous location. I'm
sure Brainard will post more later.

Incidentally, this is one of the few areas we did not
scout because of hunters (and hunter trailers) last
Sunday when we were unable to locate the bird, so this
may be a regular hang out as well as S5.
