[birdky] Proposed Changes to hunting and fishing regulations at Muscatatuc k NWR

Late yesterday I became aware of some proposed changes to the hunting and
fishing regulations at Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge. Changes to the
fishing regs. would allow fishing on all bodies of water within the refuge
all year or nearly so, this would include all marshes as well as lakes and
ponds. I believe this would be detrimental to the use of these waters by
all but Mallards and Canada Geese. The proposed changes to the hunting regs
would be an extension to the deer season (probably needed), a spring Turkey
season (this would limit access to many areas of the refuge during peak
neotropical migration), squirrel hunting would also be allowed (the only
squirrel I have seen on the property are at the Visitors center).
The public comment period ends 19 NOV 04. Please contact Pam Dyer - acting
refuge manager - by phone or email ASAP. Ask for an extension of the
comment period, if these were posted on the federal register (I have not
been able to find them), what studies have been done to show need for the
changes and for a copy of the proposed changes.
Also inform her that the economic impact of birding and other
non-consumptive uses and been shown (by government studies) to far outweigh
consumptive uses (hunting and fishing). I am not against hunting or fishing
or the refuge being used for such purposes, yet I believe these changes are
not in the best interest of the refuge or the wildlife it is set aside to
protect.
